The gist to me, about Gilbert Ling, is a few parts. But the below study reads like this to me.
The sodium potassium pump isn't needed for the sodium potassium gradient in cells to be maintained. His experiment was to take the cell membrane off cell walls and see if the sodium potassium gradient still somehow worked all on its own, which he proved is the case.
